Attention international students who have received admission letters from Chinese universities! July to August is the critical window for pre-departure preparation. Every year, some students fail to complete core preparations like visa, health check, and accommodation on time, resulting in entry delays or missed registration deadlines.
To ensure smooth enrollment, this article systematically covers three core pre-departure modules and key points to note. We recommend checking off each item one by one.
📋 Step 1: Visa & Entry Documents — Without This, You Can't Even Board the Plane
1. First things first: Do you have JW201 or JW202?
Many students rush to apply for a visa as soon as they get their admission letter, but don't even know which form they need.
- JW201 Form: For Chinese Government Scholarship students — this means you're a government-funded student
- JW202 Form: For self-funded students — the vast majority of international students fall into this category
This form is the core document for visa applications. Without it, you can't apply for a student visa at all. Be sure to confirm with your university in advance, and prepare both the original and copies.
2. Check your passport validity — right now!
Don't assume having a passport is enough. This is the most commonly overlooked pitfall.
- China visa requirement: Passport must be valid for at least 6 more months
- Some universities have stricter requirements: 12+ months of validity needed
If your passport is expiring soon, renew it immediately at your local authorities. Don't wait until your visa gets rejected.
3. X1 or X2? Don't apply for the wrong visa type
There are two types of student visas — applying for the wrong one can cause major headaches:
- X1 Visa: For long-term students studying in China for over 180 days. You'll also need to apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry.
- X2 Visa: For short-term exchanges or short courses under 180 days.
Most undergraduate and master's students need the X1 visa — don't mix them up.
✅ X1 Visa Required Documents Checklist (Don't miss any!)
- Valid passport (original + copy)
- Admission letter (original + copy)
- JW201 or JW202 form (original + copy)
- Completed visa application form (with photo attached)
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form
Step 2: Health Check & Insurance — Mandatory for University Registration, Nothing Can Be Missing
1. Health check reports aren't just any medical exam
Many students think they can just go to any hospital for a check-up, only to be told it's invalid once they arrive and have to redo it. Watch for these details:
- The exam must be done within 6 months before your application — too early and it won't count
- The form must be filled out in English — Chinese forms are not accepted
- The photo must have a hospital seal across the edge — unsealed photos don't count
- Doctor's signature and hospital official seal are both required — missing either may result in rejection
We recommend going directly to your country's designated entry-exit health check center — they know China's requirements best and are least likely to make mistakes.
2. Medical insurance is mandatory! Don't take chances
All international students in China must purchase comprehensive medical insurance within China. This is not optional — it's a mandatory regulation.
- The university will verify your insurance policy during registration
- Without insurance, you may not be able to complete registration
- If you get sick in China, insurance can save you a lot of money
Don't go for cheap, unknown insurance plans. Make sure to buy formal international student medical insurance that meets China's Ministry of Education requirements.
Step 3: Flights & Accommodation — Book Early, Save Money & Stress Less
1. Student flights have great benefits — don't buy full-price tickets directly
Many students don't know that international students get exclusive flight benefits that can save a lot of money:
- Extra free baggage allowance: Usually one extra 23kg bag — super useful for first-time students bringing lots of stuff
- Flexible change/cancellation policies: Student tickets generally have more lenient rebooking and refund rules — no panic if your visa is delayed
- Some airlines offer free airport pickup: Very helpful for first-time arrivals who don't know their way around
Note: Buying student tickets requires showing your admission letter and valid student visa — remember to prepare these documents in advance.
2. Accommodation: Apply for on-campus housing early, watch out for rental scams off-campus
- On-campus dorms: Most universities open applications in July. Spots are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis — apply early if you want to live on campus. Dorms are cheap, safe, and close to classrooms — the top choice for new students.
- Off-campus rentals: If you plan to rent your own place, always go through official channels to ensure legal and compliant accommodation. Important warning: Never pay a deposit to a private landlord in advance! Every year there are cases of new students getting scammed — losing their deposit before even arriving in China.
